Government considering stricter seaweed quality standards

by Bob @ 8:55 am. Filed under News

The Department of Agriculture is considering implementing tighter quality standards on the marketing of seaweed. The ARMM (Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao) is Mindanao’s top producer of seaweed, capturing nearly 70% of the market.

Currently, the export market for Philippine seaweed is very strong, with demand in China leading the way.

The world seaweed market is estimated to be worth US$3.5 billion annually. Japan, USA and to a lesser extent China purchase more than 50 percent of the world trade in Seaweed and other algae, the three being the largest importers of seaweeds.

In 2004, the Philippines exported 11,958 tons of seaweed, with a market value of US$54 Million. The strongest markets for Philippine seaweed were the USA, followed by Denmark. Mindanao produces more than half of the seaweed exported by the Philippines.
